Australian Market Overview
RBA & Interest Rates
The RBA has lowered the cash rate twice this year to 3.85%, with another cut expected in its 8 July 2025 meeting. While inflation is now back within the 2–3% target band, the RBA is easing cautiously. Further cuts are forecast in August and November, with the rate potentially reaching below 3% in early 2026—a level considered the lower end of ‘neutral’. As market conditions evolve, we anticipate adjusting our own indicative distribution rates accordingly.
Economic Growth
Australia’s economy continues to grow modestly. The RBA has revised down its expectations for household consumption, bringing its outlook closer to market consensus. Strong exports and infrastructure investment are helping support overall demand. The RBA remains optimistic that China’s targeted stimulus will support Australian trade, though global risks may weigh on growth.
Labour Market & Inflation
Unemployment remains low, and wage growth is still elevated, especially in high-demand sectors. Inflation has returned to target range of 2-3% and is expected to ease slightly further by year-end. If this trend continues, it could create further room for rate cuts into 2026.
Outlook
Australia is clearly shifting into a more accommodative policy phase. The cash rate is likely to remain below 3.0% through next year—a notable shift from its 4.35% peak in 2024. Risks remain, particularly from global economic slowdowns or unexpected inflation pressures, but the trend suggests and supports demand for income-focused investments.
Global Market Overview
Earlier this year, global markets were unsettled by the US’s announcement of so-called ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs, which were subsequently scaled back, reducing the risk of broad-based trade escalation. The US is now expected to maintain tariffs averaging around 10%, with higher rates continuing to apply mainly to countries like China. While broad retaliation appears unlikely, recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, such as Israel’s strike on Iran, underscore ongoing global risks.
With inflation pressures easing globally, major central banks are shifting toward more accommodative monetary policy. The US Federal Reserve is widely expected to begin cutting rates later this year, with one to two reductions possible by the end of 2025, depending on inflation and labour market conditions. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank has commenced easing, and the Bank of England is likely to follow, though both remain cautious.
Looking ahead, global interest rates are expected to settle above pre-pandemic levels, reflecting structural changes in spending, fiscal policy, investment trends, and supply chains. Although financial conditions have improved, uncertainty remains as geopolitical tensions persist and regional growth paths diverge.
